Practical Gifts for Babies and Expectant Mothers
Sure, it is always fun to get that frilly lace-edged dress for the mom expecting a baby girl. Or the baseball glove and bat for a mom expecting a baby boy. But what does that new mom-to-be REALLY need? Here are some practical gifts you can give that Mom will truly appreciate after baby arrives! Feel free to couple it with any frivolous and fun item of choice, though! :) * Diapers. Whether mom is using cloth or disposables, having plenty of diapers on hand is very crucial. No mom wants to run out at 3 am. Getting diapers in bigger sizes is great as well, if mom has room to store them. If mom is using a diaper service, a gift certificate for a month, 3-months, or 6-months would be a fantastic idea, too! * Baby Medicine Cabinet. I once filled a basket with baby Tylenol, baby gas drops, baby nose bulb, baby Vicks vaporub, some calming night-time baby wash and a soft washcloth. These are all things mom might need, and if you don't have them when needed - well, lets just say it isn't fun to run to the drug store with a sick newborn on your hands! * Baby bottles, pacifiers, sippy cups. These are another of those oft-forgotten baby needs. Mom may have a preference as to the brand and type, though - so in this case it is always good to check for a baby registry or give the mom a call first, or just be sure to include a gift receipt in case she'd like to exchange it. * Sleepers and blanket sleepers. Sure, those fancy outfits are adorable, but not very comfortable for sleeping, an activity that newborns indulge in quite a bit! A baby almost can't have too many sleepers - having clean ones ready to go for middle of the night blowouts are so handy. Blanket sleepers are a great alternative to swaddling, and are safer (no suffocation risk, like with a blanket coming loose and wrapping around baby's nose and mouth). * Plain white bodysuits. Those little t-shirts that snap at the crotch are great for layering in the cooler months of the year, and having at least a few plain white ones are always nice, because they can go under anything! Other gifts that experienced moms love to receive are clothes in larger sizes (babies grow fast!), books (both baby board books and books for later in childhood), bibs and burp cloths (again, most babies can never have too many of these), and simple basic toys to keep baby entertained - ones that don't need batteries (or at the very least, include a set of extra batteries). So the next time you have a baby shower to attend, remember this list and think from the mom's perspective. Your gift, if practical, will be remembered much longer than those that end up just sitting on a shelf, never used or worn. |
